Rick Schmidt, B.S.A., A.I.I.C., M.A. (Conflict Resolution)
Background and Education
I began mediating in 1991, for Mediation Services' victim-offender reconciliation program, and
opened my private mediation practice in 1995. In 1996, I left a successful family business
partnership to pursue graduate studies and a full-time career in conflict resolution. Since that
time, I have mediated in a broad range of conflict situations including workplaces, families,
schools, businesses, private and public institutions, neighborhoods, and churches.
I hold a Master of Arts in Conflict Resolution (Antioch University, Ohio, 1999), a Diploma in
Mediation (Mediation Services, Winnipeg, 1999), a Certificate in Conflict Resolution (Mediation
Services, 1998), an Associateship with the Insurance Institute of Canada (1986), and a Bachelor
of Science in Agriculture (University of Manitoba, 1978).
Experience
My current involvement in the conflict resolution field is diverse. In addition to my work as a
mediator and facilitator in private practice, I teach conflict resolution (CR) studies at the University
of Winnipeg (Menno Simons College), lead CR training workshops, and do CR consulting and
private CR coaching for individuals in a great variety of situations.
Since 1994, I've enjoyed leading CR workshops for a wide variety of groups, in both urban and
rural settings. My eighteen years as a partner in a thriving family-owned business have provided
the experience that helps connect theory to practice.
Beginning in 1999, I have taught conflict resolution courses at Concord College and Canadian
Mennonite University, and am currently teaching at the University of Winnipeg.
Professional and Community Involvement
I am pleased to work frequently as an associate of Winnipeg's Resolution Skills Centre , where I
also continue to volunteer in that organization's community and victim-offender mediation
programs.
I am a member of Family Mediation Manitoba and the Conflict Resolution Network of Canada.
My wife and I are active members of River East Church, and together we are working at honing our
conflict resolution skills at home.
